UPDATES on the I-44 Meramec River Bridge Project

bridge work UPDATE

MoDOT has provided the following update:

As you can tell, we did get the ramp from Watson Road to I-44/I-270 reopened this month. That should help reduce some of the delays along Lindbergh at I-44 significantly during morning and evening rush.

This Friday we will be finishing setting girders on a portion of the westbound bridge over the Meramec River.

We are still working in the middle of I-44 to complete the new roadway. The next stage of that will include moving westbound I-44 onto a bypass east of the Meramec River. We expect that to happen sometime late next week. We will continue to have lane closures during off-peak hours to complete this work. There should be minimal impact to westbound traffic after the move to the bypass, but drivers should be aware that the traffic pattern will change somewhat.

We expect the new roadway and bridge in the middle of I-44 to be completed by early December. We will be working towards shifting the eastbound I-44 traffic onto the new westbound roadway and bridge before Christmas. The number of lanes will remain the same

MoDOT to close I-44 near I-270 September 13-16 for bridge work

https://www.modot.org/node/16651

Drivers who use I-44 for weekend travel will want to consider alternate routes September 13-16, as MoDOT will close the for work on the Watson Road bridge.

This work, which includes bridge girder painting, will allow crews to accelerate construction enough to be able to open the bridge by the end of September, one month early.

Crews will start closing all lanes of eastbound and westbound I-44 between I-270 and Geyer Road starting at 7 p.m. Friday, September 13, with all lanes closed by 8 p.m.

All lanes are scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, September 16.

During the interstate closure, drivers will still be able to get from I-44 to I-270 in both directions, as well as to eastbound Watson Road (Route 366). Eastbound I-44 drivers wanting to continue east on I-44 can take exit 277A to Watson Road, turn onto Lindbergh, and take Lindbergh back to eastbound I-44. Westbound I-44 drivers wanting to continue west on I-44 will need to take the I-270 exit (exit 276) and use the westbound I-44 ramp (after the bridge) to continue on westbound I-44 during the closure. These detours are similar to the ones used during the bridge demolition earlier this summer.

The westbound Watson Road bridge should now reopen by the end of September. While the bridge is closed, Watson Road drivers can use Lindbergh to access westbound I-44 and northbound and southbound I-270.

MoDOT has provided the following update for September 2019

Now that water levels in the Meramec River have dropped, crews have been working hard on building the foundation for the new westbound bridge in the river. We are still planning to make the shift to move eastbound traffic to the new westbound bridge in December of this year.

Work also continues on the westbound bridge from Watson Road to northbound and southbound I-270 and westbound I-44. Right now, we are tentatively planning to have a full closure on eastbound and westbound I-44 the weekend of September 13-16. By having this full closure, we will be able to get much of the remaining work that needs to be complete on the bridge, and anticipate a good chance that we can get the bridge open by the end of September – about a month early. This will, of course, continue to depend on weather.

The week prior to that, we anticipate having an additional westbound lane closed, during the day, to place girders for the bridge. Details on that, and the full closure, will be shared when we are a little closer to that week.

When the Watson Bridge reopens, we will reopen the ramp from Watson Road to northbound and southbound I-270 and westbound I-44. The eastbound lane which is closed around the clock will continue to remain closed through October.

We are still continuing to work on mainline pavement east and west of the Meramec River.

MoDOT has provided the following update for August 2019:

MoDOT to close I-44 near I-270 Aug. 2-5 to set Watson bridge girders

https://www.modot.org/node/16085

Drivers who use I-44 for weekend travel will want to consider alternate routes August 2-5, as MoDOT will close the interstate to set girders for the new westbound Watson Road bridge over I-44.

Crews will close all lanes of eastbound and westbound I-44 between I-270 and Geyer Road starting at 7 p.m. Friday, August 2, with all lanes closed by 8 p.m.

These detours are similar to the ones used during the bridge demolition after Memorial Day.

All I-44 lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, August 5.

This is the first of two weekend I-44 closures. Crews will close westbound I-44 the following weekend between Geyer Road and I-270 at 7 p.m. Friday, August 9. Crews will be placing deck panels on the bridge over the westbound lanes. Westbound I-44 drivers wanting to continue west on I-44 will need to take the I-270 exit (exit 276) and use the westbound I-44 ramp (after the bridge) to continue on westbound I-44 during the closure. All westbound lanes are scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, August 12.

The westbound Watson Road bridge is scheduled to remain closed until November 2019. While the bridge is closed, Watson Road drivers can use Lindbergh to access westbound I-44 and northbound and southbound I-270.

MoDOT has provided the following update for May 2019:

05/21/2019

Drivers who use I-44 for weekend travel will want to consider alternate routes May 31 – June 3, as MoDOT will close the interstate to remove the westbound Watson Road bridge over I-44.

Crews will close all lanes of eastbound and westbound I-44 between I-270 and Geyer Road to remove the westbound Route 366 (Watson Road) bridge over I-44, starting at 7 p.m. Friday, May 31, with all lanes closed by 8 p.m.. In addition, the westbound Route 366 bridge will close, starting at 7 p.m. Friday, May 31.

During the interstate closure, drivers will still be able to get from westbound I-44 to northbound and southbound I-270, and from eastbound I-44 to northbound and southbound I-270, as well as to eastbound Watson Road (Route 366). Eastbound I-44 drivers wanting to continue east on I-44 can take Watson Road, turn onto Lindbergh, and take Lindbergh back to eastbound I-44. Westbound I-44 drivers wanting to continue west on I-44 will need to take the I-270 exit and use the westbound Watson ramp (after the bridge) to continue on westbound I-44 during the closure.

All I-44 lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, June 3. When the lanes reopen, westbound I-44 lanes will remain as they are currently. Eastbound I-44 will be restriped with two through lanes, one ramp lane for northbound I-270 and one ramp lane for southbound I-270. This will give crews working on the Watson Road bridge the room they need to construct the bridge and complete median drainage and pavement work between the Meramec River and I-270.

When westbound Watson Road over the interstate closes at 7 p.m. Friday May 31, the bridge will remain closed for five months while crews rebuild the bridge. While the bridge is closed, Watson Road drivers can use Lindbergh to access westbound I-44 and northbound and southbound I-270.

MoDOT has provided the following update for January 2019:

Construction on the new westbound Meramec River Bridge is continuing along well. Since the project began last year, crews have been working on the foundation and have gotten a good amount of it done.  Although you can see some of that work on the western side, as you drive by, we prefer that you watch on-going construction from the construction camera: https://app.oxblue.com/open/modot/I44MeramecBridge.  Please continue to pay attention and slow down as you drive through the work zone.

Over the next couple of months, crews will continue to work on those foundations, and we hope to have the girders placed for the new bridge sometime in February and the driving surface for the bridge sometime in March.  Of course, all that work is weather dependent.

Here’s what you can expect as we continue through the project this year.  We are expecting to move the traffic on eastbound I-44 onto the new westbound bridge sometime in late spring or early summer. That will let crews take down the eastbound bridge and start construction work there.

This summer, we will also close the ramp from westbound Route 366 (Watson Road) to westbound I-44 for five months, starting Memorial Day weekend.  We will be rebuilding the westbound Watson Road bridge over I-44 during that time.  You can anticipate a full closure of I-44 in both directions for a weekend to demolish the bridge, just after Memorial Day weekend. While the westbound Watson Road bridge is closed, drivers will be able to use Lindbergh to get to westbound I-44.

09/27/2018

MoDOT has provided the following update for September 2018:

Drivers heading west on I-44 during evening rush may want to consider adjusting their commute times, or using alternate routes, as MoDOT will close one westbound I-44 lane between I-270 and Bowles for Meramec River Bridge construction.

Starting at 7 p.m. Monday, October 1, the right lane on westbound I-44 will be closed just after the ramp to I-270. It will remain closed around the clock for the next three years as part of the on-going construction project.

Access from Watson Road (Route 366), as well as northbound and southbound I-270, to westbound I-44 will shift, but will not change during this portion of the project. Drivers will also still be able to access the Soccer Park exit from westbound I-44. Drivers should expect greater congestion, especially during the evening rush period, in this area.

The three-year project replaces the westbound and eastbound I-44 bridges over the Meramec, makes improvements to the ramps between I-270 and I-44, and replaces the bridge from eastbound I-44 to eastbound Watson Road, and the bridge from westbound Watson Road to westbound I-44.  For more details on the project, please visit: https://www.modot.org/i-44-meramec-river-bridge-replacement.

MoDOT has provided the following updates for August 2018:

Over the next week, crews will be wrapping up the work to clear and remove material from the right-of-way within the construction zone - both underneath the bridge and around the I-44 and I-270 interchange to allow grading work for future improvements associated with the project.

Currently, crews continue to focus on foundation work for the new westbound bridge. As part of the work, the pedestrian trail along Yarnell Road has been closed for safety reasons. It is anticipated that the trail will remain closed through 2020.

Although the project will require lane closures at some point, there are no anticipated dates for lane closures along I-44 at this time. Information about future lane closures will be shared when it is available.

PATH CLOSURE

With work beginning on the new river bridge at I-44, the shared use path from south of the existing eastbound bridge to north of the existing westbound bridge will be closed immediately due to safety concerns. Check back for progress updates.
